Naturalization

Requirements

Naturalization is when U.S. citizenship is granted to a foreign citizen or national after he/she/they fulfills the requirements established below. 

  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of filing.

  • Have a Green Card for at least 5 years.

  • Have a Green Card through marriage and be married to the petitioner for 3 years or more.

  • You have qualifying service in the U.S. armed forces or are a dependent of someone who has qualifying service in the U.S. armed forces and meet all other eligibility requirements. 

  • You are the child of  a U.S. citizen, born outside the U.S., currently residing outside the U.S., and all other eligibility requirements are met.  

  • Show that you have lived for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you apply. 

  • Demonstrate continuous residence in the United States for at least 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing.

  • Show that you have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing.

  • Be able to read, write, and speak basic English. 

  • Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government (civics). 

  • Demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution.

After Meeting The Requirements

If you are approved for naturalization after meeting the requirements and filing Form N-400, you must take the Naturalization test.

Naturalization Test

During the naturalization interview, an applicant will take an English and a Civics test unless he or she qualifies for an exemption or waiver. The English test is comprised of. 

 

Speaking Test​

  • Tests an applicant's ability to speak English. 

Reading Test

 

  • An applicant must read aloud one out of three sentences correctly to demonstrate an ability to read in English. 

Writing Test

 

  • An applicant must write one out of three sentences correctly to demonstrate an ability to write in English. 

Civics Test

 

  • An applicant will be asked up to 10 questions from the list of 100 questions. 

  • An applicant must answer correctly six of the 10 questions to pass the civics test

If they fail any portion of the test during their first interview, they will be retested on the portion of the test that they failed between 60 and 90 days from the date of their initial interview.
